Aftab Mahmood outlined the basic principles,
mechanisms, clinical indications & applications,
advantages and inferences of echocardiography
along with the demonstration of relevant slides
and diagrams. This thoroughly informative lecture
also incorporated a Video display which depicted
various echocardiography images along with discussion
on different clinical conditions. The gathering
included radiologists, ultrasonologists, echocardiographers,
cardiologists, cardiac surgeon and general physicians
who duly appreciated and acknowledged this immensely
useful and educative lecture.

“NORMAL KIDNEY
FUNCTIONS”

Renal
diseases are a major cause of morbidity &
mortality, amongst great health challenges and
are common, costly and deadly. Dr. Ahmed discussed
normal kidney functions and renal diseases in
general along with the interpretation and inferences
of normal renal test reports as well as abnormal
ones. The gathering mainly comprised of family
physicians, general practitioners and medical
specialists.
Discussing in length the incidence, causes,
pathogenesis, evaluation and management of renal
diseases, Dr. Ahmad pointed out diabetes and
hypertension as the chief culprits amongst other
causes of end stage renal disease. He stressed
upon the preventive aspect of managing renal
diseases and emphasized early and appropriate
evaluation, diagnosis and management to minimize
the kidney disease burden.
The lecture which was very absorbing, interactive
and discussion oriented was highly acknowledged
by the appreciative audience.

“DIABETIC
NEPHROPATHY”

Diabetes
mellitus is a growing cause of health concern
in developing countries and unfortunately has
also reached mammoth proportions in Pakistan.
Dr. Aasim Ahmed emphasized that early diagnosis
and proper management of diabetes was essential
to minimize the complications of the disease
including renal damage. He discussed at length
the different treatment modalities of diabetes
mellitus and their rationale. He also shared
his clinical experience as a nephrologist dealing
with diabetic nephropathy patients and displayed
a number of classical cases on slide with their
clinical presentation and focused on the main
salient features of the disease.
The lecture was attended by general physicians,
family physicians and medical specialists who
actively participated in the discussion oriented
lecture and immensely benefited from the talk.
Lectures of such nature go a long way in better
understanding of the disease and effective prevention
of its complications.

Dr. Hina Khattak thoroughly outlined the main
causes, disease processes and treatment rationale
of common dental problems.
Dr. Khattak particularly emphasized on basic
measures like maintaining a good oral hygiene,
daily proper teeth brushing, regular flossing
and avoidance of excessive sweets, pan, chalia,
tobacco etc. as mainstay of oral disease prevention.
The lecture was very enlightening and attended
by a large number of dental surgeons & dentistry
students.

This
state of the art lecture was a brief introduction
to the exciting and rapidly evolving field of
Stem cell therapies in Acute Myocardial Infarction
in which Dr. Adil Akhtar shared the international
experience in this field.
After the introduction, Dr. Akhtar talked about
the rationale for doing stem cell therapy in
cardiology. The pre clinical studies were discussed
in depth and then the data from two of the human
trials was presented. In the end Dr. Akhtar
inferred that from the clinical data this approach
looks very promising but large scale trials
will further validate these preliminary findings.
This excellent lecture was followed by a very
interactive discussion and question answer session
in which the large number of eminent cardiologists,
haematologists and oncologists present, actively
participated.

“Recurrent
Urinary Tract Infection”

Infectious
disease of the urinary tract comprising of Cystitis,
Pyelonephritis and Prostatitis are quite common
and affect a large number of people all over
the world.
Dr. Aasim Ahmad initially discussed the different
sites of UTI along with highlighting the anatomy
& differences of male and female urinary
tract. Dr. Ahmad explained in detail the epidemiology,
pathogenesis, causative organisms, management
and treatment modalities of UTI along with their
rationale. Presenting different clinical case
scenarios, he also threw light on the various
clinical presentations of the disease. He also
stressed upon the fact that a secure diagnosis
of UTI requires a urine culture. Lastly, Dr.
Ahmad explained the different treatment options
of recurrent UTI.
This highly absorbing and informative lecture
was duly appreciated by the sizable number of
doctors who had participated in this lecture
and also greatly benefited from the discussion
that followed.

for most people. A considerable number of patients
require local and some even general anaesthesia
for the dental treatment procedure to take place.
In a very educative lecture, Dr. Mohsin Girach
discussed the different types of local anaesthetics,
their mode of action, duration, usage, side
effects, complications & its causes and
preventive measures. Dr. Girach shared his vast
clinical experience with the audience and gave
some very useful and practical tips.
A very large number of dental consultants, dental
surgeons and dentistry students attended the
lecture which was followed by a group discussion.
